Excelsior JAP MKIV 500cc short stroke speedway racing motorcycle. 1951. The arrival of the speedway JAP engine in the 1930's ushered in a period of dominance lasting until the 1960's. As the JAP was an engine available to all it provided the opportunity for specialist frame makers to capture the lions share of the market. Excelsior was an established JAP customer and was one of only a few mainstream modern motorcycle companies to retain a speedway model in the catalogue after WW2
